Copenhagen, summer 1914. The fight for voting rights for women and servants is at its peak, and Europe stands on the brink of World War I. The body of a young woman is found in Ladegårdsåen. The police write it off as yet another in a series of suicides among poor women, even though witnesses speak of a missing child born out of wedlock and an unknown man who spoke with the young woman shortly before she was found dead. Amalie Bang is a journalist at a major Copenhagen newspaper. When she gets wind of the case, she sees her chance to write about something other than the rich and famous, and she is willing to do anything to uncover the truth about the young women’s deaths.

Together with a young police officer, Ewald, she follows the trail of a conspiracy that runs from Copenhagen’s underworld far up into the highest strata of society. Amalie’s ambitions turn deadly, and the real threat turns out to be closer than anyone could have imagined.
